My name's Joanna! I'm a 22 year old from Long Island. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and I'm working towards my Master's in Mental Health Counseling.
In undergrad, I found my home away fromhome in my sorority Sigma Delta Tau, and personal reward in helping establish a chapter of NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) on Campus.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, relieving stress through Zumba (I'm a certified instructor) and strength training, and watching tv series on Netflix. Many days I think I single-handedly keep at least one Dunkin Donuts location in business (decaf caramel iced coffee with almond milk please). I've always been an unofficial "therapist" for my friends and family, so I'm excited to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor to make acareer out of it.
My diagnosis is Generalized Anxiety Disorder. While not officially diagnosed, I've alsospent at least ten years obsessively picking at my skin, particularly on my face. Apart from my diagnosis, I'm familiar with many other diagnoses through my personal relationships (anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, borderline personality disorder, ADHD, bulimia, bipolar disorder, self harm, thoughts of/attempted suicide).
It was through these instances, watching myself and loved ones struggle, that I developed a passion for mental health advocacy and helping those afflicted. I know what a rollercoaster mental health can be - whether it be a diagnosed condition, or just the way life can push our limits and really challenge us. It's my goal to be a support system for you, a personal cheerleader, to ride the waves of the highs and lows with you and remind you you're never alone. While I may not have all the answers, I'll always have ears ready to listen and a heart eager to help!
